Conte Candoli, 1927 – 2001
The quintessential West Coast jazz musician, Conte, together with older brother and fellow trumpeter, Pete, were stalwarts of the style. He rose to prominence with Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, and Stan Kenton.
The Condoli Brothers, Super Sax, Gerry Mulligan’s Concert Jazz Band, and Howard Rumsey’s Lighthouse All-Stars are some of the more important groups in which he was featured. He was a regular in Doc Severinson’s NBC Orchestra as well as on Johnny Carson’s Tonite Show Band for 20 years. He played and recorded with a wide array of musicians from Big Bands to Be Bop and virtually every one of the Cool players.
